Why your AC is dripping
An AC removes moisture from the air. That water normally collects in a tray inside the indoor unit and flows away through a drain pipe. When water drips from the unit into the room, the most likely cause is that this drainage path is blocked or not working.
In Dubai, where ACs run for many hours in humid weather, they produce a lot of condensation, so even a partly blocked drain can overflow quickly.
What to do right now
- Switch the AC off to stop more water building up. - Protect the floor and furniture with towels or a container. - Wipe water away from sockets and electrical points. - Check the filter. If it is very dirty, it may be part of the problem.
If the leak is coming from the ceiling rather than the unit, it could be a ducted AC drain or a plumbing issue. Tell building management if it may affect a neighbour.
Common causes of AC water leaks
Blocked drain line. Dust, slime and algae can build up inside the drain pipe. This is the most frequent cause.
Dirty filters. Restricted airflow can make the coil too cold and freeze. When the ice melts, the tray may overflow.
Damaged or tilted drain tray. A cracked tray or a unit that is not level lets water escape.
Disconnected drain pipe. Pipes can loosen after installation, renovation or moving furniture.
Low refrigerant. Low refrigerant can cause icing on the coil and dripping as it melts.
Condensate pump failure. Some units rely on a small pump to lift water out. If it fails, water backs up.
When to call a technician
A professional is needed if water keeps dripping after you clean the filter, if you see ice on the unit, if the leak comes from a ceiling or wall, or if water is close to electrical points. Technicians can clear the drain line, check the tray and pump and test refrigerant levels.
